Process of Auto Repossession
The typical process of repossession begins once the borrowers fail to make monthly payments on their vehicle until paid off. The complete process of repossession includes the following:
-
The borrower fails to make payments
-
The lender takes possession of the vehicle
-
The car is put up for sale
-
The borrower pays the balance if the vehicle is sold at a discount
-
The borrower then may need to pay repossession fees
When repossession goes forward, the lender takes the vehicle from the borrower, often without warning, and may tow the car. In some cases, lenders can disable the vehicle, preventing them from driving it until your back on good terms again. Before this happens, though, a borrower will generally receive notification that they’re behind on payments and the consequences of not paying the loan. However, people may not know when a repossessing agent is coming to take away the vehicle.
When is Repossession Allowed?
If terms that the borrower agreed to upon purchasing or leasing the car are not met, such as making payments on time and keeping an updated insurance policy, a lending company or a bank has the right to remove the vehicle from a residence or even at work or school.

We use skip tracing, the process of locating a person’s whereabouts, for repossessing vehicles. A skip tracer is a person who performs this task. “Skip” refers to the person being searched for, derived from the term “to ski town.” “Tracing” means the act of locating the skip.
